New Normal: Outside the Box Marketing

๐Ÿ“ฆThinking outside the box is what makes entrepreneurs and small business owners successful. Especially during these uncertain times those skills are being called upon daily. • Social Media Self Audit

social media self audit | KimMcDaniels Co.

When starting with a social media management client I do an audit of their accounts. You can perform a self audit by asking yourself these questions:

    • How do you feel about engaging on social media?
    • What social media platform do you think your audience is on?
    • How much time do you spend creating posts for social media?
    • Do you feel you should increase or decrease the time you spent creating social media posts?
    • If you increase time spent creating social media, where will this time come from?
    • What platforms/networks are you on and how many times per day do you post?
    • What do you think the ideal number of posts per day should be?
    • What are your most responsive type of posts?
      • text only, photos with commentary, video, live, stories, memes, posts with humor, new blog content, product links?
    • Do you know your competitors? If so, make a list and compare your social media presence to theirs.
    • What hashtags is your ideal customer using in their posts?
    • What type of content do you think your customer would respond to?
      • video, live, photo posts, etc.
    • What do you need to do to start creating more of what your customer is responding to?

Time-Saving Tips For Staying Active on Social Media: Know what to look for when you log in.

Notifications, Messages, and Friend requests: Check

Your own profile: click on your own profile at least once a day. Check for photos that didnโ€™t upload correctly, links that donโ€™t work, or anything else that didnโ€™t get posted as you had planned.

Your news feed: scroll through your news feed to see what your friends are posting. Notice that I said โ€œ๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—น๐—น ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ด๐—ตโ€ and not โ€œread everything everyone has posted for the past 24 hoursโ€. • Social Media Audit

Facebook, Instagram, Google My Business, Twitter, LinkedIn all should be audited at least two times per year. You don’t want to be surprised when you see your cover images, hours of operation, and offers are out of date.

  • Margaritaville Marketing

Did you know Jimmy Buffet makes 1.5 billion per year with his Margaritaville brand? Just a silly song started it all. What ‘silly little thing’ can your brand use to make a fraction of this?

  • how to use haro for small business marketing

Help a Reporter Out (known as HARO) helps journalists find sources for their stories. But, you donโ€™t have to be a journalist to benefit from this free, powerful resource. You can use it to identify PR opportunities that boost your digital marketing strategy.

HARO is free, but you need to be strategic with your time to get the most out of it.

    • Sign up for a free HARO account at https://www.helpareporter.com/ and make sure you sign up as a SOURCE.
Advice: Use a separate email address for this or use an email address that has good filtering capabilities, Gmail is good for this.
    • Figure out what youโ€™re an expert in.
Advice: HARO journalists want expertise and focus, not a general response. Once you know exactly what topics you can address as an expert source, itโ€™s simple to find relevant queries. Simply search the exact phrase in your email client.
    • Put together a quick bio and a headshot
Advice: Many reporters ask for a headshot, but you canโ€™t send attachments when you reply to HARO queries. So upload a good headshot to your website or to Imgur so you can send a link in your HARO response.
Save a super short bio (100 words or less) and a longer bio (no more than a paragraph) somewhere you can easily access them. Stick to work-related accomplishments, establish why youโ€™re an expert, and keep it simple.
    • Send a HARO response that stands out
Advice: Check HARO digests (by searching in your email client, or if youโ€™re a glutton for punishment, reading the entire email) once or twice a day to make sure you jump on queries quickly. Reporters get hammered with dozens, if not hundreds, of responses. You want to get in early and provide exactly what they need.
Read carefully. Youโ€™ll get deleted if you forget something the journalist asked for, or if you provide a response thatโ€™s too long or too short. Journalists want you to help them do their jobs. Most prefer not to have to follow up with you again. So make it count. The more often you respond, the more you can put together a library of common responses that you can lightly edit next time.
The more specific and interesting you can be, the better. And donโ€™t expect to hear back if the journalist isnโ€™t interested. In fact, you might not hear back even if the journalist uses your information. So set up a Google Alert for your name and your business to be on the safe side.
    • Be polite and reciprocate
If your response is chosen and youโ€™re interviewed or quoted in an article, be sure to share it on your social networks.
Advice: Most journalists will reach out with a link, and many will give you social-ready language that makes it simple to copy and paste right into social media platforms. You can also ask that the journalist tag you in any posts from the publication where youโ€™re featured. They donโ€™t always have control over social promotion, but itโ€™s worth checking.

Good luck and let me know if I can help manage this for you. Interested? Book a strategy session with me here: https://meetme.so/KimMcDaniels

  • Contact Your List! How Newsletters Are Making A Difference NOW!

I know you have a list of emails that you can begin sending a newsletter! Here’s my strategy:

    1. Plan on sending 2 email newsletters per month. Check your statistics/insights on Facebook & Instagram and see when your followers/peeps are online. That’s when you should schedule to send.

–One newsletter is about your business with promotions and sales. But the main/feature article needs to be something informative.

–One newsletter is a lifestyle newsletter, something personal. Let them get to know you. Lots of images from your weekend trips, holidays, your pets, night out, brewery tour, roadtrips, trip to the park, exercising, profile an employeeโ€ฆand some written content about the images.
    2. Post to your blog! The content as well as the images.
    3. Post to social media in multiple ways.

–Take one or several of the images and create a post for a day or two after sending the newsletter to your list. After all, the people that are on your list get special treatment. Encourage your social media followers to sign up for your newsletter to get the news FIRST! And the post content can be a copy of the first paragraph or snippet of the article. Make sure you link to the blog post.

–For the next several months you can use parts of the newsletter to do social media posts. Take quotes from the article and make a graphic.

    The Results!!!

My client Woodstock Inn B&B: we sent out a newsletter a week before Valentine’s Day 2020. The newsletter was noting the holiday and what ‘EXTRAS’ we had for the occasion, such as roses, chocolates, massages, and chocolate fondue. The rooms (10) were sold out within 24 hours, and they purchased EXTRAS also!

THIS is the power of a list of people that have chosen to hear from you and are interested in your product or what you have to sell.

    Other types of newsletters:

    • โ€œLetter-from-the-editorโ€ or โ€œFeatured Articleโ€
    • Special Discounts/Offers
    • Company News/Highlights
    • New Products/Offerings
    • Holidays
    • Events
    • Solicit Customer Feedback & Review
    • Share Reviews
    • Industry Info
    • Customer Success Story
    • Advice Column & Insider Tips
    • Blog Post Roundup
    • Create a Mix of any of these.
      • A featured article with sales, discounts, events at the bottom.
